Since this is the first post on the blog, it is only fitting I explain what I am planning to do. Truth is, I don’t really know. I am currently in my mid 30’s (update 2025) mid 40’s and recently I have found myself talking to several of my good friends about what our life growing up was like. My friends seemed to share my enthusiasm for the things we had (and didn’t have – I’m looking at you, internet) in our lives.
I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, and had the privilege, yes, privilege, of going day-to-day without a cell phone. I also enjoyed the feeling of closing my bedroom door and knowing that it was “my place.” I could do nearly whatever I wanted. Now, as a married adult, nothing is just “mine” and hiding from 3 kids just to have a moment’s peace or work on a hobby is next to impossible.
What I plan on doing is telling you stories of some of my fondest memories, the technology we used to have, the anonymity and freedom we used to have, and some of the stupid things we used to get ourselves into. WAIT… don’t go anywhere. This isn’t going to be a diary of my childhood. Each post will have some connection to today, and maybe will teach some people a little something about what we used to do before GPS. (FYI, we used a map. That’s like Google Maps, without the Google. It was on paper….)
Hope you have fun!
